I have found finding information for the beginner around setting up home or
small business wireless networks is hard to find. This is especially true if
you want to set up an extended network to connected two areas or even
buildings. I thought I would share some of my experiences with wireless networking.
Most of us start with a modem. In Australia this is usually an ADSL or cable
modem. In the regional areas customers too far for ADSL can have a Bigpond
Telstra nextG wireless modem but more on that later. We'll talk about the
ADSL/Cable people for now. For an ADSL modem there is usually a telephone
cable input and a USB and an Ethernet output. The customer either uses the
USB or the Ethernet to connect to a single computer. I prefer to use the
Ethernet cable as you do not need special driver software for the modem to
work with your computer.
To go wireless you will need a wireless router. Most wireless routers come with a disk to help install
the router on the PC. Run this or if you would rather live more dangerously just plug the PC into one of the
ports on the router. You could also do it using a wireless connection, but that will cause more complications
when you secure the connection later.
... to be finished ...
