Setting up a Network Printer

Setting up shared computers on a network is fairly easy. The computer attached to a printer (usually via a USB cable now) needs to have file and printer sharing activated and sharing enabled for the printer (In printer properties) . The target computer then just needs to run the add printer wizard in the printers folder. The wizard will even install the printer driver from the computer sharing the printer.
Printers that sit on the network (that is are plugged directly into a switch or router) are a different matter. Many have a client program that will help locate and install the printer but some do not or the software is flaky and doesn't manage to find the printer.

Dialup Dialog popping up when Internet Explorer started

A lot of my customers are still using dial up connections. A common problem that occurs when they upgrade to broadband is the request to dialup when they open internet explorer.

Computers that shut themselves down

This is a fairly common complaint. I currently have one that I can't pin down why it stops, but I'll discuss some of the most common causes.

Sixty Minute Site Makeover to improve search engine ranking

This is a copy of a presentation I gave at a franchisee meeting. There has been growing interest in the use of the internet as a tool for attracting customers and generating income rather than being simply a static brochure. 12 months ago I started with one of the our standard templates and customized with my own franchise details. I noticed that I was getting some traffic but little business. At the start of this calendar year I started making changes to my site to increase the traffic flow and it also increased the amount of business I received purely from web searches.

Verifying Form data using PHP

A customer required some form validation for their Bed and Breakfast website. Validation can be done using JavaScript but a lot of people have JavaScript turned off or worse bypass the validation to cause some problems. As PHP (and ASP) work at the server a user cannot bypass the validation step.

Vista login problem

I had a customer who was working in his Dell computer running Vista home premium. Internet Explorer crashed and the next time he logged out, when he logged in he got the error:
The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

I get emails

Sitemap generator.

Sitemaps are a way to tell the major search engine about all of the pages in your website. There are a number formats that the Sitemap can be in, but the XML format allows additional information to be entered with the Sitemap.

How to repair a computer that wont start

There are a lot of reasons why a computer will not start and also when a customer rings to say a computer will not start this can mean a lot of things. I had a computer recently that wouldn't start. How to get your web site noticed

The problem with many web designers is that they think that they design just like they are designing a brochure. Web sites should be designed with search engines and end customers in mind. There is no point having the prettiest web site on the internet if nobody can find you. Bruce Gow has a number of Search Engine Optimization tips that will help any web site increase it's web visibility more ...

Electricity Blackouts and Brownouts

This article is from the March 2008 computer troubleshooters newsletter. Most technology depends on a clean, uninterrupted supply of electricity. Unfortunately, inconsistencies in your electrical supply or a sudden complete loss of power can cause major damage to computer systems and other sensitive equipment. This article investigates power problems and the devices that are essential for protecting your technology investment.   Electrical supply is subjected to ‘brownouts’, surges and even complete outages. ‘Brownouts’ are momentary slumps in supply, to a level under 100 volts. They are normally caused by ‘heavy use’ devices (e.g. motors, compressors, air conditioners and laser printers) being turned on, creating a momentary drain on the power supply. Brownouts can affect a computer even if the voltage dip cannot be ‘seen’ (e.g. the lights in the room dimming). And if they don’t crash your PC, they can cause stresses that can shorten the life of its components. more ...
I was originally an ASP programmer but always lamented it was difficult to make well organized code in ASP, it always looked like a dog's breakfast. ASP.NET has come along now and it is difficult to do any ASP programming with the current Visual Studio tool set. We are supposed to use ASP.NET now but unless you are making a major client/server solution ASP.NET is overkill. Also I most clients I deal with now are using Unix/Linux hosts. I decided to look at PHP and am delighted that it reminds me a lot of ASP and it is easy to make the transition. It is perfect for doing the minor jobs that most customer's require, although I am using it for an invoicing system that I am developing so I can invoice when I am on the job.
I have a laptop that had gotten wet. The hard-drive was corrupted and also the DVD driver was not working and it couldn't boot from a USB drive (or the ports weren't working). I tried to install XP on a new drive by putting it into a USB harness on one of my desktops. I found that this didn't work (For some reason it works but it puts the boot information on the 'C' drive of my desktop not the USB drive. I finally settled on using PXE. This is a system that allows allows the operating system to be installed over the network. It took awhile to get setup. The best source is was using TFTPD32. this site has a good document on how to set-up a remote XP install. It has also good information around how to make an install.
