I Get Letters ... |
I thought I had 512Mb memory but the computer reports 384Mb
The writer continues that he opened his Compaq Presario R3000 and only found a 256Mb memory stick.
He wants to know how to upgrade the computer to 1Gb of memory
My answer is that this happens because the
video card is taking 128Mb of memory and so Windows is reporting
512-128 is 384Mb. If you check the BIOS it will tell you the total installed RAM. Also here you
can change how much RAM the video card uses. If you are doing
basic business processes, then a smaller amount of graphics RAM
is safe.
The reason only a single 256Mb memory sticks was found was that
this model of laptop does in fact have two memory slots. Only
one slot is accessible easily from the base of the laptop. The
second memory slot is under the keyboard.
To access this memory slot you first need to remove the plate
above the keyboard. This plate contains the power button. To
remove this plate turn the laptop over and remove the three
screws that secure the plate. Turn the computer over and then
carefully remove the plate using a flat blade screwdriver. With
the plate removed the screws securing the keyboard will be
visible. Remove these screws and the second memory slot will be
displayed.
When replacing memory, it is not generally recommended to have
two mismatched memory cards, so either match the memory cards or
use a single DDR SODIM memory card. |
